Joe Pass – The Complete Pacific Jazz Joe Pass Sessions (2001
Posted on October 23rd, 2009 No commentsJoe Pass – The Complete Pacific Jazz Joe Pass Sessions (2001) Box Set
Review by Steven Loewy
Guitarist Joe Pass was known for his forthright, straight-ahead style, gorgeous tone, and melodic concepts. This magnificent five-CD set collects his entire output in 1963 and 1964 as a leader, with additional sessions in which Pass plays in a trio led by Les McCann. Most of the tracks feature a quartet (the five exceptions adding the saxophone or flute of Bill Perkins), with the guitarist virtually always a key voice. Pass recorded three records for Pacific after 1964 with limited jazz content, and they are not included in this collection for that reason. While many of the dozens of selections included here do not measure up to Pass’ exemplary work recorded later on Pablo Records (a prime example being his classic Virtuoso LP), there are fine tracks to be found in the instant set that no admirer of either Pass or of the jazz guitar will want to be without. This is particularly true of the Django LP sessions with guitarist John Pisano, originally issued on Pacific, as well as the final CD in the instant collection that was initially issued on the Blue Note label, and on which the individual tracks are noticeably lengthier and more substantial. Elsewhere, some of the repertoire is checkered, mixing movie themes, country & western, soul, and jazz standards. But who can really complain about hearing the great guitarist playing Hank Williams’ “Hey, Good Lookin’” or “Cold, Cold Heart”? As with all the Mosaic boxed sets, this one comes in a strictly limited edition with a comprehensive, oversized booklet containing a detailed discography and liner notes, extreme attention to detail, and excellent sound quality.

Blindspott – Studio Albums (nz Band)
Posted on October 22nd, 2009 No commentsBlindspott – Studio Discography
“Blindspott was a nu metal/alternative rock band from Waitakere, New Zealand. They were formed in 1997, originally consisting of Damian Alexander (vocals), Shelton Woolright (drums), Marcus Powell (guitar, backing vocals), Dave McDermott (bass) and Brandon Reihana (guitar). Previous members included Gareth Flemming (bass) and Karl Vilisini (turntablist, keyboardist).
Blindspott had a break through single with ‘Nil By Mouth’ in 2001 which gained major airplay on TV and radio alike. Other hits released during 2001-2003 were ‘Room to Breathe’, Top 10 single ‘Phlex’, ‘Blank’, ‘S.U.I.T’ and ‘Lit Up’. Their self titled debut album (2002) reached number 1 in its first week of release in New Zealand and they have had another top 10 single- Phlex.
Their debut album, ‘Blindspott’, went platinum in New Zealand in its first week of release. It is presently triple-platinum. Blindspott were voted NZ’s favourite band by the public as part of an Air New Zealand competition in 2003. Their songs have also been hits in Australia and in Asia.
Their single, Drown, was released on May 1, 2006. Drown entered the official New Zealand music chart on May 7, 2006, going straight to 4th place.
Blindspott’s second album, End the Silence, was released in New Zealand on May 29, 2006. End The Silence broke New Zealand music records – in the first week of release the album went straight to Number 1 on the official New Zealand music charts. Blindspott are the first New Zealand music act to have both their albums debut in the charts at Number 1. The first single from the album Yours Truly reached the Top 10.
In August 2006, Blindspott played at the massive Summer Sonic music festival in Tokyo, Japan, alongside major international acts such as Metallica, Deftones, Linkin Park and Tool.
End the Silence was released in Australia on September 2, 2006.
In 2007, after 10 years together and many publicised band fallouts along the way, Blindspott broke up to focus on more solo efforts. Blindspott played their final concert on August 25, 2007 at the Powerstation nightclub in Auckland.”

1987 WARLOCK managed to make their breakthrough (at least in Europe) with their fourth album “Triumph And Agony” and with it also marked the end of the combo. While the former members Peter Szigeti (Guitars) and Frank Rittel after a brief guest appearance on U.D.O.’s “Animal House” album and some demos under the name of ENGINE (if I am not wrong) disappeared without a trace, Doro Pesch started her solo career with a perpetually changing backing band, with more or less success.
At least WARLOCK managed to step off the stage with a damn good album. The ultracool opening hymn “All We Are” alone already justifies the purchase of the album, even though some people can’t stand that song any more, right Ralf? Anyways, this hammer stands in one line with “Breaking The Law” (JUDAS PRIEST), “Run To The Hills” (IRON MAIDEN), “Paranoid” (BLACK SABBATH) and “Ace Of Spades” (MOTÖRHEAD)!!! But the other songs are not much worse. Especially the permanently pushing “Three Minute Warning”, the loose, but still heavy “I Rule The Ruins”, the mid tempo rocker “Kiss Of Death”, which starts out slowly, underlaid with wolves’ howling, the brilliant stomper “East Meets West” with ist totally unleashed guitar solos, the great “Metal Tango”, which’s title already says it all, and the fighter hymn “Für immer”, alternatingly performed in German, English and Spanish.
That’s how energetic, melodic Metal has to sound like! A big plus is also the majestic front cover, it could hardly get any better. That the production is top notch goes without saying, doesn’t it?

Since their formation in 2004 Eyes Set to Kill have taken the punk-rock and
hardcore communities by storm. In less than two years this Arizona based five
piece has become one of MySpaces 1 unsigned bands, shared stages with many
of the scenes hottest bands and released one of the best selling independent
releases for many online retailers.Originally conceived by as the two piece of consisting of Alexia Rodriguez
(Lead Guitar, Vocals), and Anissa Rodriguez (Bass Guitar), this Phoenix, AZ
screamo outfit attempted to create a unique sound that would combine the
soft, melodic feel of female vocals and gut-wrenching screaming, backed up by
powerful instrumentals with a post-hardcore influence.Having a screamer and a melodic singer has just always been our vision. We
wanted to try something different because we didnt want to be the typical
screamo band, says bassist Anissa Rodriguez. We didnt try to make our
songs a certain sound. We play what we feel.Searching the local area for talented and dedicated musicians to create this
sound the group was frequently ignored and turned down by sexist musicians,
despite their obvious talent and potential. The girls were classified,
stereotyped, and rejected by the ignorant music scene before their demo was
given a mere listen.People just assumed we were going to be just another chick band that has no
musical talent,” Rodriguez says. “Since we were girls, no one took us
seriously and assumed that we couldnt play and write good songs. After struggling to be heard for what seemed an eternity, the girls found
their missing pieces in early 2006 with the addition of Greg Kerwin,
(Guitar), Brandon Anderson (Vocals), and Caleb Clifton(Drums) to an already
blistering line-up. From there the band would shared stages with the likes of
Chiodos, Bless the Fall, Goodbye Tomorrow, My American Heart, and Greeley
Estates and even did a stint on the Warped Tour.We booked our first tour this summer completely through MySpace, says
Screamer Brandon Anderson about the young band embracing a do it yourself
work ethic. The band operates our own MySpace; reply to all comments,
messages, and friend requests and does a lot promoting. Our manager made our
DVD, music videos and live videos. We do everything on our own and dont wait
around for anyone. With a intense live show and a desire to make things happen on their own
terms, Eyes Set To Kill entered the studio to record a mind-blowing EP with
acclaimed Larry Elyea . The result is a crushing EP
that unleashes a whirlwind of melodic guitar riffs that violently flood into
the ears of listeners, emotionally capturing screams and hypnotizing melodic
vocal hooks that speak of seethe with emotion.- Track List —————————————————————- -

Mat Kearney – Nothing Left To Lose
Posted on October 13th, 2009 No commentsMat Kearney – Nothing Left to Lose (2006)

Mat Kearney (born December 1, 1978) is a singer and songwriter based out of Nashville, TN, originally from Eugene, Oregon. His music has an acoustic base with hints of hip hop. He is signed to Aware/Columbia Records. In addition to singing, he also plays guitar, piano and harmonica.
Mat attended California State University Chico, where he was a member of the soccer team. Although not widely known, Mat is a devout Christian and his beliefs are evident in some of his music, such as the songs “Undeniable” and “Girl America”.
At a concert in Houston in 2006, he revealed that his song “All I Need” was written based on two of his friends from New Orleans and their story during Hurricane Katrina.
Mat’s songs have appeared on TV series such as Grey’s Anatomy, Kyle XY, The Unit, Without A Trace, and The Closer.
After Mat’s “All I Need” was featured on Grey’s Anatomy, “All I Need” and “Nothing Left to Lose” began to chart the iTunes top 100 downloaded songs. “Nothing Left to Lose” charted the Billboard Hot 100 after this. It was Mat’s first (and so far only) single to chart.

My Review
Pearl Jam’s third birth comes with mixed emotion: whilst obviously being a musical success it also contains some of Eddie Vedder’s sad musings on Kurt Cobain’s death, most prominently in the haunting “Immortality”. Inside the cover art, a beautiful poem is included:
I waited all day.
you waited all day..
but you left before sunset..
and I just wanted to tell you
the moment was beautiful.
Just wanted to dance to bad music
drive bad cars..
watch bad TV..
should have stayed for the sunset…
if not for me.
External Reviews
It’s a sad paradox of these times that the artists who most successfully express our fears and anxieties are the ones who are least able to cope with the burdens of fame. Whether it’s Sinéad O’Connor, who masochistically invites humiliation with public displays of emotional nakedness, or Kurt Cobain, who finally just gave up, it’s sometimes tempting to say what Frank Sinatra once told George Michael that is, “Stop complaining and enjoy the ride.” But then, Frank is not exactly the most sensitive guy himself. No one regrets that he’s too famous now to be Ian MacKaye of Fugazi more than Eddie Vedder does. As it was for Cobain, it’s difficult for Vedder to adjust to the fact that the people who used to beat him up in school are now among his biggest fans. While Vitalogy is not the calculatedly anti-commercial album that In Utero was rumored to be (but really wasn’t) before it was released, the one designed to alienate all the fans Vedder doesn’t like, it is a wildly uneven and difficult record, sometimes maddening, sometimes ridiculous, often powerful.
“As privileged as a ~censored~” is how Vedder sums up his fame in “Immortality.” “Victims in demand for public show.” In “Corduroy,” success has left him disaffected and no longer in control of his destiny: “I’m already cut off like I feared/I’ll end up alone like I began,” he sings before concluding: “All the things that others want for me/Can’t buy what I want because it’s free.” Ironically nostalgic for the desperately troubled youth that inspired his best and most tormented songs, he sings on “Not for You”: “All that’s sacred comes from youth/Naive and true with no power/Nothing to do/I still remember/Why don’t you?” Like Pete Townshend, whose Quadrophenia was the soundtrack of Vedder’s adolescence, Vedder seems afraid that while once he was the Punk, he’s now the Godfather.
Vedder is also more haunted by intimations of mortality than ever before not exactly a new theme for him but a chilling one for a record whose title means “the study of life.” The album opens with a death-obsessed song called “Last Exit,” and its final track, “Stupid-mop,” concludes with a meditation on suicide. On “Immortality,” Vedder acknowledges, “Cannot stay long/Some die just too young.”
Vitalogy has a number of gripping songs that match the soaring anthems of Ten, the extended grooves of Vs. or the poetry of either record. The first three tracks are a promising start: “Last Exit,” “Not for You” and especially “Spin the Black Circle,” a revvedup thrash tribute to vinyl, rock harder than anything Pearl Jam have ever done. “Whipping” and “Corduroy” are also hard edged and catchy. “Better Man” is a haunting ballad about a woman trapped in a bad relationship; it recalls the character study “Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town” on Vs. As on “Daughter,” also from Vs., Vedder’s empathy for and identification with women throughout Vitalogy is remarkably affecting and unforced.
Interspersed among the stronger tracks, though, are throwaways and strange experiments that don’t always work. The demented polka “Bugs,” which features Vedder, backed by a discordant accordion, ranting paranoiacally about insects, makes an uncharacteristic stab at humor but ends up being more silly than funny. “Pry, To” is a one-minute doodle that consists of Vedder spelling out the word privacy over and over until we get the point already.
But the most bizarre cut on the record is the last one, “Stupidmop,” a seven-minute hommage to the Beatles’ “Revolution 9.” Consisting of tape loops of distressed voices over banshee guitar howls, the song begs the question, “Is anyone still listening out there?” It opens with a young girl repeating “My spanking, that’s the only thing I want so much.” “Why is that better than a hug?” a woman asks her. “Because you get closer to the person,” the girl replies. The cut closes with a dialogue that is even more disturbing than it might ordinarily be in the wake of Kurt Cobain’s death. A man asks a woman, “Do you ever think that you actually would kill yourself?” “Well, if I thought about it real deep, I believe I would,” she answers. They’re the last words on the album.
Bart Simpson once daydreamed that he was a rock star with a phony British accent, singing, “Me Fans Are Stupid Pigs.” Some may think Vedder has reached the point where he thinks his efforts are just Pearl Jam before swine; they’ll dismiss this record as swerving dangerously close to being contemptuous of his audience. But Vitalogy isn’t Lou Reed’s Metal Machine Music, nor does it seem like a tossed-off interlude like Zooropa. It’s more a portrait of an artist in crisis, a man who hasn’t yet decided what direction to take next.
